1. You are likely "eligible" to get into HSU with the minimum requirements of a "C" or higher but this
doesn't mean you are likely to be accepted. On the CSU homepage which is linked in the tabs of this blog, there is a tab that is labeled "CSU comparison of acceptance GPA," according to CSUmentor, the average GPA of an HSU accepted applicant is a 3.2. This means you can get in with a 2.0 or higher BUT most accepted students have a GPA of a 3.2. You really want to aim for a 3.0 or better for CSUs these days (as of 2014). I do NOT want to discourage you from applying if you only have a 2.0 or about there, your life story, extra curricular activities, major choice, classes you have taken, SAT/ACT scores and more have a huge impact on whether or not you will be accepted. The GPA is just an average, a number that is given more meaning than it deserves. I also HIGHLY recommend to get in contact and "bug" and speak to the college's representatives. If they remember you they will be way more likely to go out on a limb and ask for you to be wait-listed or accepted based on their opinion and influence than just a "faceless" name. Try to meet in person, show GPA growth if say you got a 2.0 sophomore year but a 3.0 junior year, etc. Try to prove to them that you are a worthy student and WANT to attend their university. :)
Eligibility Index PRIOR to applying: (See your chances!) This is a calculation based off of your GPA and test scores (ie SAT/ACT). The GPA ignores Freshman year of HS (only includes 10th-12th.) Depending on your GPA frosh year this can be good or... hurts you. AP/HONORS courses with a C or higher are awarded extra grade points! You get one point more. So an A in a CP/regular class is worth 4 while an AP course is worth 5 points! So a B would now be worth 4 and a C worth 3!
***If your a CALI resident/student you need a MINIMUM EI score of 3000 if you took the SAT and a minimum score of 718 if you took the ACT!***
You calculate the EI by multiplying your GPA (4 points for A, 3 points for B, 2 for C, 1 for D and 0 for F, then divide the total number by the number of classes you took. IE say Marie had 10 As, 3 Bs, and 2 Cs; her total would be 53 points and then divided by the 15 graded classes = 53/15 = a GPA of a 3.53). So take YOUR GPA and multiply it by 800 (my example would now be a number of: 3.53*800= 2,824) and ADD this number to your TOTAL score on your SAT! {Pretend my example student, Marie, had a SAT score of 1800, this would make the overall eligibility score of Marie: 1800+2824= 4,624!} ***If you took the ACT, multiply your GPA by 200 (NOT 800!) {So Marie's GPA of a 3.53 would = 3.53*200= 706) and MULTIPLY your ACT score by 10 (Say Marie has an ACT score of 30, so 30*10=300) and add the two numbers (Marie's score would be a 1006).
2. Come OCTOBER 1st, apply to all CSUs via csumentor.edu
3. HSU will contact you if they need your transcripts (they most definitely will, but check out the site given to you in your application confirmation for important dates like when it will be due.)
4. MAKE sure to log in ASAP when you apply to receive important dates and documents. MANY colleges do NOT e-mail you but will use their special site, it is often called "mycollege," "collegecubby," etc. This is the only way to turn docs in on time!
5. MAKE SURE TO SIGN UP FOR ORIENTATIONS ASAP! As SOON as POSSIBLE! Make a decisions ASAP about what college to attend. It is a pretty big and tough decision for many people but make it before sign-ups for orientation. Sometimes, orientation spots can run out and you are forced to either miss orientation or a take it online, which REALLY sucks and puts a bad spin on an already new and stressful situation. So, stay on top of DATES!
6. SIGN UP FOR HOUSING ASAP! This can ALSO fill up VERY quickly. There are typically MORE students at a college than housing. Check out the Housing TAB for everything housing at HSU!
7. You do NOT need to declare a major right away, it is NOT a bad idea to go in "undecided." It leaves your options open the first two years when your are mostly taking GE courses anyway. On a NOTE: YOU MAY END UP TAKING COURSES AT A CC/JC! This is a sad outcome of the current economic issues in California and America. You may end up with very few credits at HSU and end up taking courses concurrently at College of the Redwoods. This happens at MANY CSUs. Be prepared of this POSSIBILITY. Also, if it does happen, don't let it diminish your joy and experiences as a freshman at a CSU. The housing and experiences make it so very much worth it!
