Housing at Humboldt

1. FRESHMAN are NOT required to live on campus although it is highly recommended by HSU and myself to do so if possible.

2. There is housing for 2050 students at HSU. 350 are for returning residence hall students. The other 1700 is for freshman and transfer students. So, there is NOt enough space for every student nor every freshman although there is still a sufficient amount and a good chance you can get the housing you would like. JUST make sure to APPLY for housing ASAP!

3. HSU does allow you to choose your own roommates. So, if you have an buddies attending HSU you can room with them. Albeit, it is really fun and an adventure to live with a stranger. It also teaches you vital skills! ALSO (and this is unique!) you can BROWSE through students who have a strong profile match to yours and start convos with them through the myhousing tab of HSU's student account services. If you end up liking each other you can sign up to be roomies.

4. HSU also does roommates by housing profiles which allows suitable roommate matches based off answers to a questionnaire. These vary depending on the college and do NOT guarantee friendship or mutual like of a roommate but they can help with some basics.

5. Like many colleges (both fortunately AND unfortunately!) you cannot change rooms for the firs two weeks. If you get a terrible first roommate (like me my frosh year) you have to wait a minimum of two weeks to move. I am sure if you actually get a "monster" or someone whom harasses you they can help you move but in normal situations you MUST wait a fortnight. SO answer that questionnaire truthfully AND be willing to chill and negotiate on this new living situation! (At least until two weeks have passed!)

6. You will get contact info in your myhousing section of your student account services and will be able to contact them to negotiate who should bring what (ie share or not share fridges, microwaves, ETC) and get to know one another.

7. TYPES of HOUSING:

RESIDENCE HALLS: You can arrange to live in a themed or unthemed residence hall. The themes are typically centered around: eco living, health, art, academics, adventure and community service, upperclassmen, veterans, rainbow community and the like! Each year it is tweaked so check out the housing tabs at the HSU website to find out what they're offering for that academic year!

Residence halls are the traditional dormitory style of housing. They can be tons of fun and an awesome experience. They also mean communal living with a large group of people. Each building typically houses about 50 students while some have more. They are usually arranged with each floor sharing school like rows of bathrooms, sinks and showers. Bathrooms are single-gendered (unless living on a floor with individual bathrooms and co-ed rooms, this is different from co-ed floors where an all-female room can be next door to an all-male room). Typically, an entire floor will be all women or all men and will alternate in a building, men-women-men-women ETC.

SUITES: Suites are four bedrooms joined by a common area that is only for the students in the suite and their guests.

APARTMENTS: These offer 4-6 rooms which can house 4-12 people, typically it is two doubles and two singles so 6 people in a four room and 3-4 doubles and 3-2 singles in a 6 room so 9-10 people in a 6-room. The apts come with a full KITCHEN and TWO bathrooms. They can be co-ed.
